I really enjoyed my co-op here! You have the opportunity to gain a lot out of the experience but you HAVE to put in the effort. If you just do the minimum amount of work & don't try to make connections with the clients or learn about their disabilities, you'll get bored FAST! The day-to-day routine can get monotonous & you have to find ways to not let that get to you (I really suggest getting to know as many clients as possibly, they are all very different from one another & most of them are sweethearts!). You really have to have A LOT of patience to work with this type of population. Some clients are high functioning while others have a more severe case of autism/developmental disorder. Some clients have excellent communication skills while others are nonverbal. Some clients can do the jobs almost completely independently while others need CONSTANT supervision. It is a GREAT experience overall & I wish I could come back! |
